The World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species lists the Przewalski's horse as extinct in the wild. Causes of extinction were hunting, harsh climate, loss of habitat, and loss of water sources to farm animals. Currently, there are around 1500 animals remaining in zoos and breeding facilities, carrying genes from 14 founders. Because loss of genetic diversity threatens their continued survival, the National Zoo's Conservation and Research Center and other institutions around the world maintain breeding populations that serve as a source of animals for reintroduction in Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan. Thanks to their effort nearly 400 horses now roam in re-introduction sites in Mongolia and China. - Taken from the Zoo Website

The smaller elephant is the 2001 male calf, Kandula. He is named after Sri Lanka's most famous elephant.

The DC Zoo is currently constructing an entire Elephant Trail in which they will have a herd of elephants being able to walk and play and socialize in a large enclosure like in the wild. It will help scientists learn how to protect them in the wild.

Hippos are very social creatures and live in herds. Happy was the 22nd hippo to be born on the DC Zoo grounds, but will be the last for a while until they can successfully create a Hippo Habitat which they are looking to do in the future.

Giant pandas have one very brief mating season each year, with only about one day a year in which conception can occur. For the last six years, Mei Xiang has typically ovulated in March or April. This year’s early start is unusual, but due to the expertise of National Zoo staff, they were able to identify signs of this early reproductive activity and mobilized quickly for a possible artificial insemination. There is no conclusive study that indicates the cause of panda ovulation. Although scientists know that giant pandas mostly breed in late winter to early spring, it is not known if the onset of reproductive activity is triggered by increasing day length, temperature or some other environmental factor. This year’s unusually early onset of reproductive activity should allow Zoo scientists to shed knew light on what triggers the reproduction of this endangered species. - Taken from the Zoo Website

Inside the Panda House, a small group of conservationists watch the Pandas from several cameras located around their habitat. This is to watch their actions, personalities, behavior to see how they are doing, if they are sick, or to watch for possible pregnancy! We can only hope!

Clouded leopards are listed as vulnerable on the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Animals. They are threatened by a high demand for their attractive pelts, which have ceremonial meaning in Taiwan. Due to the reclusive nature of the clouded leopard, it is difficult to assess how many remain in the wild, but they are highly endangered in some areas, and only relatively stable in others. Deforestation, habitat destruction, and poaching are major concerns for the future of the clouded leopard. - Taken from the Zoo's Website.

The Washington DC Zoo has four adult orangutans and two juveniles. Unfortunately, my time at the zoo was limited and I was only able to snap a few of the lovely primates. Next time I wil be sure to spend more time in the Ape House, and hopefully see the Orangutan's on the "O Line", a series of towers connected by a line in which the Orangutan's can travel to and from the Ape House and Think Tank.

These beautiful guys are on the IUCN Red List as vulnerable. There are only a handful of them in the wild now, and are also common as house pets. They are hunted for their fur.

These guys remind me of little children who just ate A TON of candy. They had about 4 of them in 4 seperate enclosures and all they did was run and jump and run some more. They are very quick, and very colorful. They are native to Southeast Asia.
